Alternatieve vormen van energieopwekking zijn dringend nodig om de CO2-uitstoot drastisch te verlagen.

In het dicht bevolkte Vlaanderen is het niet eenvoudig om geschikte plaatsen voor windmolens te vinden. Dikwijls worden ze geplaatst langs drukke verkeersassen of nabij industriezones want veelal speelt het NIMBY-effect (Not In My Backyard).

Nochtans treden bij het transport over grote afstand van elektrische energie beduidende verliezen op.

Het probleem voor het vinden van geschikte plaatsen in het dicht bevolkte Vlaanderen blijkt nog maar eens met het Ventilusproject. De hoogspanningslijn Ventilus moet energie afkomstig van windmolenparken op zee aan land brengen en tegelijk het Vlaamse elektriciteitsnet versterken. Voor de energievoorziening is het cruciaal dat Ventilus er komt, maar al jaren klinkt er luid protest bij buurtbewoners en lokale politiekers die zich achter hun bezorgde burgers scharen… NIMBY !

Renewable forms of energy production are urgently needed to drastically reduce CO2 emissions.

In the dense populated region of Flanders, it is not easy to find suitable places for windmills. They are often placed along busy traffic axes or near industrial zones because the NIMBY effect (Not In My Backyard) often plays a role.

However, significant energy losses occur when electrical energy is transported over long distances.

The problem of finding suitable places in the dense populated Flanders is once again apparent with the Ventilus project. The Ventilus high-voltage line must bring energy from offshore wind farms to land and at the same time strengthen the Flemish electricity grid. It is crucial for the energy supply that Ventilus gets there, but for years there has been loud protest from local residents and local politiciens who rally behind their concerned citizens… NIMBY!
